It has begun
When they said Vista had problems with activation, it was an euphemism.
After 2 small weeks working with Vista on the job's computer, after having finally installed all the drivers for that computer and after having installed all my software I need … and having fun with it for the past day or so, I'm greeted with a "you made some hardware changes lately, please reactivate" … mmmm-kay?! What hardware changes? Like installing the missing driver for my AC-97 sound card? Like installing the missing driver for the RALink wireless network card (probably that)? Like installing the missing NForce Audio MIDI driver for my card? Or like installing Grisoft AVG on the computer? Oh yeah, these are hardware changes for you!
But anyways, ok, let's reactivate, takes 2 seconds … except when I did it, here's my new message and friend:

Please tell me I will not have to buy again this stupid software every 2 weeks? It costs 431,87 with taxes. Geez. Oh and they are not currently open, so I guess I will call back their activation service tomorrow.
Gotta love Microsoft.
This is the best description of what users feel with the activation system, and how I increasingly feel about these ever-so-intrusive DRM systems. Some are good, some are adequate, some are simply over the edge. XP was nearing the edge, and now I just crossed it with Vista.
Update: Called this morning. The person must have heard that approximately 200 times per day, he kept keeping cutting me, when I said the system says it was installed elsewhere and it wCan I get the request number please? … with only the question about whether it was installed elsewhere or not. *Sigh*

mes sympathies vieux…
