Coconut?

Note: This is the first thing I could find that I wrote on the Internet, probably one of my earliest presence. You can get the other messages for this old e-mail address here and a more recent one here. I will not post all the messages from this usenet thread, only the first one. And please mind the spelling, that I was able to write in English back then is nearly a miracle. Fun to know I wrote this 12 years ago — It's Dec. 26 right now, and it's a food thing. It was written as a question to Rec.Food.Historic, as asked by my friends the Surprenant.

Hello. I'm searching for an information about something I can't really figure by myself. I don't know where to post this message exactly, but
this seems to be an appropriate base.

I've founded in a 17th century (1650) text the mention of a "Noix dInnde" in old french. After an easy traduction to "Noix D'Inde", it can be traduced in english as an "Indian Nut". On a dictionnary, it says that it's a coconut, but I'm not sure for few reasons:

  1. This was on the inventory of a Montreal farmer. What does a farmer would do with it?
  2. After his death, Sieur De Maisonneuve bought it. So, it's surely pretty rare.
  3. This Indian Nut had a life span of about 50 years. I can't believe it was eaten!

Do you have any ideas what this can be if it's not a coconut and what is the purpose of such an object? Religious meaning perhaps?

Thanks
